When Life Hands You Lemons…
By NateThe Origin of Kunu.
It all started in November of 2008. I had just spent 2 and a half years working for a corporate video production company in Barrie, Ontario when I found myself at a crossroad. I found myself driving 45 minutes each and every day just to sit in front of a computer, editing the same kind of monotonous content for eight hours. I was starting to feel my creative juices draining. Hope that my talents would finally be utilized was waning, but the security of a steady paycheck had it’s hold on me. Then in November, it happened. My contract was terminated. I was set adrift in an unstable world. And for what? I can only assume I had been replaced by someone cheaper. You see, my work was consistently beyond expectation and I always met my deadlines – even if it meant working into the wee hours of the night. I was dedicated. I pushed the envelope and stuck true to my values of providing quality work. Nevertheless, I was canned. By email, no less! Life had handed me a big bushel of lemons and now it was time for me to decide what I was going to do with them.
In the months following my dismissal I had time to reflect. I thought about my skills and what I wanted to do with my life. It was my chance to decide what was important to my life and my future career. It became pretty clear that producing quality work with a strong creative edge was where I needed to focus. However, the recent economic downturn limited my options of finding quality employment in my field. Besides, moving to Toronto just wasn’t in the cards for me and my family. The option of taking a job in another field was unlikely. Sure, factory work paid more than I was getting in my previous position, but they were laying off people left, right and centre. The only option, as I saw it, was to start my own company offering high quality production services with a strong emphasis on creativity.
Thus, Kunu was born.
