The Betty Bowl

Monday, February 8th, 2010 by Blair

If you were like the millions of North Americans watching the Super Bowl last night, then you weren’t actually watching the Super Bowl. No, you were watching for the commercials. What’s wrong with that? Nothing.

Every year advertisers spend millions for the ability to show off their products and services to the Super Bowl’s massive audience. This means they have to come up with a way to appeal to every single person that’s watching. Easier said than done.

There does seem to be 1 special ingredient to make your message stick; laughter. If you can make your audience laugh, odds are you’ll get their attention. That’s why, drum roll please, last night’s best commercial goes to Snickers.

With a dash of Betty White, and a pinch of aggression, this recipe had many rolling off of their chairs:

Video Matters, Even If It’s Not Watched

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 by Blair

Does that title make sense to you? It probably doesn’t. The perception is that a video must be viewed in order to help push the products and services of a company – while this is true there is more to the equation. The presence of video pushes your products and services.

There are a couple of new case studies that have shown that simply having the video AVAILABLE on the product/service page can increase conversion rates. That’s incredible. Essentially it increases your credibility without physically saying anything.

To view the case studies, click here.

Consider this for a moment, if the presence of video increases conversion rates, think about what the video itself will do when viewed.

Google; Not To Be Out Done

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 by Blair

The great thing about technology is how quickly things progress. If you so much as blink you can miss the latest fad. Google, who has been in the news recently for many reasons, is a company that recognizes this and aims to continue it’s entrance into the hardware market; enter the Google Chrome Tablet.

It should be stressed that it’s simply a concept, but at what point do you think the words, “C’est la vie!” enter Steve Jobs’ vocabulary?

The fabled iPad has arrived. This video is a little bit cheesy, but it displays the product in a great way:

This movie requires Adobe Flash for playback.

A Social Media Autopsy

Friday, January 22nd, 2010 by Blair

For many, especially in the small to medium size business world, social media can be overwhelming. Questions swirl like a hurricane leaving a trail of more questions than answers and sense of complete confusion.

Let’s start with the cost. Facebook? Free. Twitter? Free. WordPress (Blog)? Free. The vast majority of these applications cost virtually nothing. That means getting your social media campaign off the ground is very inexpensive. Be careful though. It’s cost might be low, but it still comes at a price. How so, you ask? Simple. It comes at the cost of your time. To fully understand what this means take a look a closer look at this Building43 blog.

Ok, cost is covered but is it really worth my time? Can I get through to my customers? Sure you can. In fact, it’s a very effective method that opens the doors beyond just generating revenue. It creates unprecedented relationships, levels the playing field, and spurs innovation.

Cost, check. Effectiveness, check. But, what about staying power – is social media about to burn out like a sophomore during an exam crunch? Not exactly. Here’s a list of almost ALL of the social media platforms and the number of their registered users.

So, what are you waiting for?

Where do you find the answers to questions like this? Well, Mr. Gates has decided to open his world to the rest with this website:

In The Face Of Danger

This is a story that will leave you in awe.

Anderson Cooper of CNN was caught on camera attempting to save the life of a Haitian boy amidst a looting frenzy. There isn’t much else to say, the video below speaks for itself:

Google’s Software Supremacy

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 by Blair

It was a little over a year ago that Google introduced Chrome. The aim was to create a much more efficient Internet browsing experience. Given the fact that they now have more than 40 million active users, it’s safe to say they have accomplished that goal. However, Google isn’t going to stop there.

They now have plans to release an Operating System (or OS) in the second half of 2010. The goal, once again, is efficiency. This time, however, it’s aimed at getting personal computer users (or PC users) ON to the Internet much faster. Google has recognized that most PC owners only press the power button for one thing; the Internet.

For some owners it can take minutes to turn on their PC before they have the opportunity to open their email. This is a waste of time. In fact, much of the items your computer is loading throughout the boot process are never even used! Again, this is a waste of time. Google, in an effort to reduce wait times, has created an OS for PC users that will bypass all of the unnecessary hoopla and get right to the point -- the Internet. They call it Chromium OS.

The beautiful part about Chromium OS is that it will only take 4 seconds to boot-up your PC! Unbelievable? Take a look:

Too Big To Ignore

Monday, January 18th, 2010 by Blair

Online video queries, for those who haven’t noticed, have absolutely exploded. In fact, it’s become so big that an increase in queries as low as only 1% can represent as many as 45 million searches. It’s almost mind boggling.

Google Video/YouTube make up the vast majority of search results when it comes to video queries. For instance, did you know that Google makes up more than 65% of all online queries? Or, that YouTube receives nearly 25% of it’s referrals from it’s father (Google)? That my friend spells opportunity.

You don’t have to be an internet marketing guru to highlight the inherent value that comes from posting a video online. YOU SIMPLY MUST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WHAT’S ALREADY THERE! If you’re looking to raise the profile of your business, increase market share, or simply get the word out in an inexpensive yet effective manner, this is the way to go.

Google Vs. Baidu

Friday, January 15th, 2010 by Blair

Anyone familiar with the Internet, knows about Google. The word is ubiquitous. You check your Gmail. You watch a movie on Google Video. You check the headlines with Google News. You speak to friends and family with Google (Video) Chat. You use Google Maps. You Google and have been Googled. When a company’s name is used as a verb, you can bet it’s top dog in its industry. Well, almost anyway.

Many people aren’t familiar with the name Baidu. Baidu is a search engine that provides an index of over 740 million web pages, 80 million images, and 10 million multi-media files. Baidu is Chinese for “hundreds of times”. Baidu’s content is controlled by the People’s Republic of China. Baidu maintains a 59% share of the Chinese market.

Google is in 2nd place with only 30%.

Recently the 2 companies have made joint headlines because Google has suggested it’s bowing out of China altogether. This would mean big things for Baidu as the fragmented audience carries with it an inherent value of $500 million. That $500 million, believe it or not, only accounts for 2% of Google’s overall revenue. In other words, it’s rice.

Google insists this is about censorship, and the recent hacking of intellectual property. While those are 2 very valid issues, the question remains; who cares? The truth is that there is no reason for a company like Google to toil away with something that accounts for only 2% of it’s total revenue. Forget the headache, and concentrate on other things – like, launching a mobile phone.

That’s all it’s about. Money. That’s it. Much like the Republic of China serving it’s people, so too does Google of it’s investors. Former head of Google China has said that there was no way anyone could surpass Baidu in the market. As a corporation responsible for the wealth of it’s investors, it’s time to pull out. That’s all there is to it.

Tone down the moral and human rights victory talk.

Sorry Google, you’ve been Baidu-ed.
